The Cincinnati Reds and the lifeless San Diego Padres locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Jack Murphy Stadium. The final score was the Cincinnati Reds
5, the lifeless San Diego Padres 4.

San Diego was unable to climb back into it after Cincinnati went ahead for
good in the top of the 4th inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. The
key at-bat was by Dave Concepcion who disappointed the partisan crowd when he
smashed a two-run homer. Doug Bair pitched a perfect ninth and was credited
with his 16th save.

Frank Pastore(3-2) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. The loss was
charged to Randy Jones(6-14). He gave up 5 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

Fred Norman(13-4) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 4 hits and 3 walks

Phil Niekro blanked Cincinnati in a very well-pitched complete game and Dale
Murphy hit 2 doubles at Riverfront Stadium as the Atlanta Braves beat the
Cincinnati Reds 5 to 0.

Niekro(12-12) escaped virtually unscathed against the Cincinnati hitters. He
gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Atlanta had 8 hits for the
night.

The loss was charged to Bill Bonham(6-5). He pitched 7 innings allowing 8
hits and 3 walks.

Tom Seaver(13-7) and Tony Brizzolara(1-11) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Seaver and the Cincinnati Reds coming out on top of the lifeless Atlanta
Braves 1 to 0.

Cincinnati scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Atlanta threatened in the 9th but Cincinnati was able to put down the rally.

Seaver got help from Doug Bair who earned his 14th save. Bobby Cox was
subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a
while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals. We've been through
this many times - it's the nature of the game. We'll be fine - as for me -
I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'

At Riverfront Stadium the lifeless Atlanta Braves were battered 9 to 4 by the
Cincinnati Reds.

Cincinnati took the lead off Mickey Mahler in the first inning plating 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Joe Morgan got things going when he drew a walk.
Morgan took second on a stolen base. After an out was recorded, Dave Collins
stepped in and he stroked a one-base hit. Johnny Bench was up next and he
cracked a two-run shot. After another out, Hector Cruz got his turn next,
but he was a strikeout victim. Cincinnati finished with 11 hits while
Atlanta ended up with 7.

Mike Lacoss(11-2) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Mahler(3-9) was
the losing pitcher. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 4
and 2/3 innings.

The San Diego Padres pitchers essentially took the day off at Riverfront
Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds offense erupted for 11 runs while Fred
Norman(12-4)with effective use of the bullpen surrendered 2 runs to San
Diego.

Norman had a solid outing for Cincinnati. He went 6 innings surrendering 6
hits and 2 walks. Both teams totaled 9 hits on the night.

John D'Acquisto(2-10) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
and surrendered 3 hits and 5 walks. This win by Cincinnati continues their
recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 8-2. For

One run was the difference at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the pitiful San Diego Padres 5 to 4.

Cincinnati went ahead for good in the 5th inning plating one baserunner
utilizing 2 base hits. Dave Concepcion doubled. After an out was recorded,
Ray Knight came to bat and lined a one-base hit. Dan Driessen was next to
bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Hector Cruz was the next batter, but he
struck out. Cincinnati rapped out 9 hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Bill Bonham(6-4) who went 7 innings, allowing 4
runs. Doug Bair recorded the save, his 13th. Bob Shirley(2-10) absorbed the
loss. He was unable to control the Cincinnati offense and allowed 9 hits and
2 walks in 6 innings.

The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 65-46. San Diego has a record
of 32-79, worst in the division after the loss.

Cincinnati Reds broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 4 to
3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.

Cincinnati won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Hector
Cruz reached on an error. Joe Beckwith then fired a sharp breaking ball that
appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled
a passed ball. A balk was called. Junior Kennedy followed and he was walked
intentionally. After an out was recorded, Dave Collins came up and he drew a
walk to load the bases. Dave Concepcion dug into the batters box next, but
he struck out. Johnny Bench followed next and he hit a single making
Cincinnati the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Cincinnati
ended up with 11 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 7.

The win was credited to Tom Hume(9-7) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Beckwith(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.

Wth the win Cincinnati now has a record of 63-46. With this loss, Los Angeles
has a 5-5 record of late, 60-46 overall.

In a thrilling finish the Atlanta Braves won in dramatic fashion coming back
to beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 6 to 5.

Atlanta erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
plating 2 runs on 2 base hits. Dale Murphy led off and he tripled. Barry
Bonnell came next and he reached on an error. After an out was recorded,
Bruce Benedict came up and he delivered a single. A wild and woolly affair,
this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Gene Garber(5-4) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Doug Bair(5-8)
ended up with the loss in relief. 'Wow, that was fun!', Garber said
following the game. 'Once in a while you play a game that reminds you just
why you got into this business to begin with!'

The Cincinnati Reds had very little trouble at Fulton Co. Stadium downing the
Atlanta Braves. The score was 9 to 3.

Atlanta was unable to climb back into it after Cincinnati went ahead for good
in the 7th inning plating 3 runs on 3 hits. Paul Blair opened up the inning
nicely when he doubled. After an out was recorded, Rick Auerbach stepped in
and he doubled. Dave Collins then drew a walk. Junior Kennedy was up next
and he hit a single. Kennedy took second on the throw. Hector Cruz stepped
into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Dave Concepcion added to the
outburst and would ground out. For the game Cincinnati out-hit Atlanta 12 to
9.

Frank Pastore(2-1) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Mickey
Mahler(3-8) was the loser. Wth the win Cincinnati now has a record of 61-45.
With the loss, Atlanta has a record of 3-7 lately, 35-70 overall.

Johnny Bench lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the Cincinnati Reds
outscored the Atlanta Braves in 12 innings 4 to 3.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Finally, Cincinnati prevailed
in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Bench delivered a solo blast.
Cincinnati and Atlanta each finished the afternoon with 10 hits.

Tom Hume(8-7) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Craig
Skok(2-3) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and no walks in

Mike Lacoss went 9 strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the league
door-mat Atlanta Braves by the score of 4 to 0 at Fulton Co.
Stadium.

Cincinnati claimed the early lead in the first inning plating an isolated run.
The early run support proved sufficient for Lacoss(9-2) and Cincinnati.
That was all the run support Lacoss required. Cincinnati finished with 7
hits in the victory.

Phil Niekro(10-12) was charged with the loss. 'I thought it was my best
performance in a long time,' said Lacoss. 'I had good command early in the
game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.'

One run was the difference at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates
defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5 to 4.

Pittsburgh took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning when they
tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh
was able to put down the rally.

The victory was credited to Dave Roberts(2-4) who went 7 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 3 runs. Grant Jackson earned his 11th save. Manny Sarmiento(1-2)
was hit with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Chuck Tanner said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'

John Milner ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
outscored the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 3.

Milner had a big evening at the plate. He slapped a base-hit plating a run in
the 1st inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 5th inning and cracked
a solo homerun in the 7th inning. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but
Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

The victory was credited to John Candelaria(4-8) who went 8 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 3 runs. The loss was charged to Tom Seaver(11-7). 'We didn't get
the key hits when we needed them' John McNamara said. 'We did what we could,
we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
