A Shutout for Sandy

1976 Canada Cup Replay

Growing up in the Boston area, Bobby Orr was the man. In 1970 and 1972 the Bruins won the Stanley Cup behind Orr's great play. In 1972, the NHL stars from Canada played the USSR in the Summit Series. Orr had a knee injury and could not play. In 1976, his great career was coming to an end. He summoned all his strength and played great as Canada won the first Canada Cup. I created the teams using Strat-O-Matic computer hockey. I used all the real players I could and created the others using similar skilled players.

I am in the process of playing the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1961 National League replay using Strat-O-Matic CD-ROM computer baseball. I manage all the Dodger games and the computer plays the rest. Actual trades, minor league callups and injuries happen as they did that season. The Dodgers, Reds and Giants are battling for the top spot, teams separated by 1 1/2 games. The Cardinals are only three games out. I am through June 17 on the schedule.

I am a big Sandy Koufax fan. 1961 was his breakout season, he won 18 games and broke the National League record for strikeouts. In 1961, the Dodgers played their home games in the Coliseum, a converted football stadium that was a hitter's paradise. The next season, the Dodgers moved into pitcher friendly Dodger Stadium. Sandy Koufax's ERA dropped like a stone and he dominated like few before him, winning three Cy Young Awards when only one was given out, leading the NL in ERA for five straight seasons and helping the Dodgers win pennants in 1963, 1965 and 1966 and the World Series in 1963 and 1965. He won the NL pitcher's Triple Crown (most wins, strikeouts and lowest ERA) in 1963, 1965 and 1966. In 1961, he was just getting started.

I have been a fan of Strat-O-Matic games since 1972. I started playing their baseball game, then played their basketball game when it came out with the 1972-73 season and also played football for a few years, using the 1973 and 1974 season teams. When Strat-O-Matic released the computer versions of their games, it made full season replays a reality. I enjoy the CD-ROM editions of their baseball, basketball and hockey games. I really enjoy the 1970's seasons when my favorites Fred Lynn, Dave Cowens and Bobby Orr were in their heyday. Strat-O-Matic makes the best sports simulations on the market. They are great fun to play and the results are right on target.

Take Care,
Tom Nahigian
