Dwight Gooden whiffed 10 batters and left fielder George Foster hit one over
the fence and had 3 RBI at Fulton Co Stadium where the New York Mets beat the
Atlanta Braves 9 to 0.

Gooden(14-1) was tremendous on the mound for New York. He didn't allow much,
just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. New York bats were very productive in
the 5th inning which saw them plate 3 runs on 3 hits and the 6th inning when
they had 3 runs on 5 hits. New York totaled 21 hits on the night.

Rick Mahler(6-10) ended up with the loss. He gave up 9 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings and saw his ERA jump from 3.14 to 3.59. Gooden didn't realize how
many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviously
surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't
think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'
