WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Matt Lawton robbed Mike Blowers of a Homerun!
Ken Griffey Jr. smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Metrodome as the very
talented Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 10 to 5.
Griffey Jr. provided much of the offense. He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 3rd inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run
(his 54th of the season) in the 5th inning and smacked a single plating a run
in the 6th inning. Seattle banged out 12 on the night.
Jeff Fassero(17-5) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Rich
Robertson(5-12) took the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in
2 and 1/3 innings.
'I felt great out there tonight' Griffey Jr. said. 'I was seeing the ball
perfectly, and I was right on it with my swing.

Jamie Moyer took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Dodger Stadium as the
Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 5 to
0.
Moyer(14-6) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Los Angeles batters. He gave up just 1 hit and no walks in 9 innings
lowering his ERA to 4.09. The left-handed Moyer lost his no-hit bid when
Greg Gagne singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Seattle banged out 7
on the afternoon.
The loss was charged to Tom Candiotti(5-6). He allowed 4 runs and 3 hits in 5
and 1/3 innings. 'When Moyer is on like that it is a tough game to play, no
doubt about it,' Bill Russell said. 'He always pitches well against us.'

Randy Johnson reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the Seattle Mariners
defeated the Chicago (AL) White Sox by the score of 12 to 3 at The
Kingdome.
Johnson(16-5) gave a fine effort for Seattle. He was reached for 6 hits and
no walks in 6 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'. Seattle out-hit
Chicago (AL) for the game, 15 hits to 7.
Chris Clemons(0-2) was the loser. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 3 and
2/3 innings of work. When asked about his strikeout total for the game,
Johnson offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally
up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them
busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

provided by Wilson. He slapped a one-base hit in the 2nd inning, blasted a
solo shot in the 4th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 14th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Seattle lit up the scoreboard in the 1st inning
when they had 9 runs on 8 hits and the 8th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits.
Seattle had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate
innings.
The win was credited to Omar Olivares(12-7) who went 5 and 2/3 innings
allowing 6 runs. Jimmy Key(10-3) was the losing pitcher. He was unable to
retire a batter allowing 4 hits and no walks.

Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. slammed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the
blistering-hot Seattle Mariners ballclub embarrassed the Texas Rangers by the

Griffey Jr. enjoyed a great day at the plate. He laced a base-hit bringing in
two baserunners in the 2nd inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th
inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 30th of the season) in the 7th inning.
Seattle kept the scorekeepers busy in the 7th inning scoring 4 runs.
Seattle simply wore out the Texas pitching staff, scoring in 6 different
innings.
The victory was credited to Derek Lowe(2-4) who went 5 innings, allowing 1
run. The loss was charged to John Burkett(7-9). He allowed 2 hits and 3

Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the
Seattle Mariners topped the Boston Red Sox by a score of 13 to 11 at Fenway
Park.
Griffey Jr. had a great day at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home run in
the 1st inning, delivered a base-hit in the 3rd inning, delivered a single in
the 4th inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 6th inning and delivered a
solo blast (his 40th of the season) in the 8th inning. This was the kind of
game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 6 times.
The win went to Bob Wells(6-3) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings. Bobby
Ayala gained credit for his 4th save. John Wasdin(0-6) was the loser in
relief. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 2 innings of work.
Seattle continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 63-43. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With this loss, Boston
has a 5-5 record of late, 56-51 overall.

Russ Davis had 2 base hits and Randy Johnson allowed only 2 hits resulting in
a big goose egg on the scoreboard for Texas as the Seattle Mariners defeated
the Texas Rangers 3 to 0 at The Kingdome.
Johnson(7-3) dominated Texas hitters. He allowed just 2 hits and 4 walks in 9
innings. Johnson whiffed an impressive total of 17 Texas batters lowering
his ERA from 2.54 to 2.25. Seattle had only 6 hits for the game.
Darren Oliver(6-2) was the loser. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3
innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Johnson - except Texas.
Johnny Oates lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys
off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a
fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'
