| In early September, the Dodgers cling to the lead with the Reds and Giants close behind. The next few weeks of play will tell the story. |

Sandy Koufax mowed down 11 Milwaukee batters at County Stadium as the Los
Angeles Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves by the count of 5 to
3.
Koufax(15-10) looked very much in control throughout the day. He surrendered
only 5 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. Los Angeles had 7 hits for the
afternoon.
Koufax got help from Larry Sherry who was credited with his 15th save. Warren
Spahn(15-9) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits and 4
walks.
Chuck Dressen was impressed with Koufax and his 11 strikeouts. 'It's tough to
generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
| As September play begins, the Reds have taken first place. The Dodgers have been slumping recently. |

Bob Purkey tossed a complete game shutout at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati
Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1 to 0.
Purkey(12-13) was in control of the game from the outset. He surrendered only
7 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.
Sandy Koufax(14-9) ended up with the loss. He was the victim of a defensive
lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
'This was a tough loss,' said Walter Alston, 'the kind that sticks with you
for awhile.'

Sandy Koufax dominated striking out 10 Cincinnati batters as the Los Angeles
Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 3 to 2.
Koufax(14-8) gave Los Angeles a solid outing. He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Los Angeles and Cincinnati
each finished the night with 4 hits.
The loss was charged to Joey Jay(13-7). Everyone seemed to enjoy the
performance of Koufax - except Cincinnati. Fred Hutchinson lamented, 'He
just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine
game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans
- unfortunately we were the visitors!'
