Cincinnati Reds broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 4 to
3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.
Cincinnati won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Hector
Cruz reached on an error. Joe Beckwith then fired a sharp breaking ball that
appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled
a passed ball. A balk was called. Junior Kennedy followed and he was walked
intentionally. After an out was recorded, Dave Collins came up and he drew a
walk to load the bases. Dave Concepcion dug into the batters box next, but
he struck out. Johnny Bench followed next and he hit a single making
Cincinnati the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Cincinnati
ended up with 11 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 7.
The win was credited to Tom Hume(9-7) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Beckwith(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
Wth the win Cincinnati now has a record of 63-46. With this loss, Los Angeles
has a 5-5 record of late, 60-46 overall.
