Thurman Munson ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Fenway Park as the New York
Yankees, running on all cylinders, ripped the Boston Red Sox by a large 14 to
2 margin.
Munson really lit it up for New York. The Boston fans let him have it for
what he did to their boys. He doubled in the 1st inning, doubled scoring a
run in the 2nd inning, delivered a solo blast in the 4th inning, lifted one
out of the park for a two run home run in the 5th inning and ripped a
base-hit in the 7th inning. Offensively, New York was a juggernaut. They
scored in 6 separate innings.
Mike Torrez(15-9) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Luis
Tiant(14-11) was the loser. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and
swung,' Munson said. 'That's it'

Dwight Gooden reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the New York Mets topped
the Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 3 at Polo Grounds.
Gooden(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for New York. He was
reached for 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings and surrendered 2
'round-trippers'. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable
to push the needed runs across.
Randy Myers earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to C.C. Sabathia(0-1).
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Gooden - except Chicago. Leo
Durocher lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off
balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun
game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

4,720 fans watched an exciting game at Municipal Stadium. The Chicago Giants
registered 5 runs in the 6th inning and topped the Kansas City Monarchs by
the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.
Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings. Chicago won it in
the 10th inning. Eddie Murray laced a base-hit. Pinson stole second with
some aggressive base running. Buzz Clarkson dug into the batters box next,
but he struck out. Chicago continued their aggressive style with another
stolen base. Chicago had a total of 10 hits for the game.
The winning pitcher was Tom Hall(2-1) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Lee
Smith(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
George Foster lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 5 RBI for Kansas City
but his effort was wasted in the loss.
