One run was the difference at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the pitiful San Diego Padres 5 to 4.
Cincinnati went ahead for good in the 5th inning plating one baserunner
utilizing 2 base hits. Dave Concepcion doubled. After an out was recorded,
Ray Knight came to bat and lined a one-base hit. Dan Driessen was next to
bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Hector Cruz was the next batter, but he
struck out. Cincinnati rapped out 9 hits for the night.
The victory was credited to Bill Bonham(6-4) who went 7 innings, allowing 4
runs. Doug Bair recorded the save, his 13th. Bob Shirley(2-10) absorbed the
loss. He was unable to control the Cincinnati offense and allowed 9 hits and
2 walks in 6 innings.
The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 65-46. San Diego has a record
of 32-79, worst in the division after the loss.
