Kansas City Monarchs broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a
10 to 9 win over the Birmingham Barons and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Elston
Howard lined a single. Monte Irvin followed next and he drew a walk. Tony
Fernandez then smacked a single to load the bases. Rev Cannady followed and
he banged out a one-base hit making Kansas City the victor and beginning a
joyous home town celebration. Kansas City totaled 15 hits on the night.

Lee Smith(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning. The
loss was charged to Heathcliff Slocumb(1-1) in relief. He allowed 1 run and
3 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
