Verdell Mathis tossed a complete game and Lou Whitaker lofted one into the
'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Stars topped the Kansas City
Monarchs by a score of 9 to 6 at Municipal Stadium.
Kansas City was unable to recover after Philadelphia went ahead in the 2nd
inning when they came up with 3 runs on 2 hits. The key offensive moment was
provided by Whitaker who silenced the stadium when he launched a three-run
homer. Kansas City made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.
The win went to Mathis(1-0) who allowed 6 runs in the game. Don Newcombe(0-1)
was the loser. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work.
Kansas City's manager was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this
one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple
more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
