WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Larry Brown blocked the plate, saving a run!
Willie Wells had 2 base hits at Yankee Stadium as the Newark Eagles beat the
Kansas City Monarchs in 11 innings by the count of 2 to 1.
Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Newark was
victorious in the 11th inning. Wells delivered a one-base hit, and an error
was also committed. After an out was recorded, Kirby Puckett stepped up to
the plate and he banged out a single giving Newark the victory and sending
the 24,830 home-town fans home happy. The game was a scoreless duel until
the 6th inning.
The victory was credited to John Donaldson(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Phil Cockrell(0-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He was the
victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
