Tom Seaver went the distance and Johnny Bench left the yard and had 2 RBI as
the Cincinnati Reds defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 6 to 1
at Riverfront Stadium.
Cincinnati had 3 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning. George Foster opened
up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Bench stepped up next and he
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. Ray Knight then lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown'. Dan Driessen stepped in and he reached on an error.
Hector Cruz got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. The early run
support proved sufficient for Seaver(17-9) and Cincinnati. That was all the
run support Seaver required. Cincinnati had 8 hits for the night.
Bob Knepper(9-11) absorbed the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering
6 runs in 5 innings.
