Silvio Martinez took a no-hitter into the 9th inning and Jerry Mumphrey had 2
base hits at Bush Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds
by the count of 5 to 2.
Martinez(9-4) was on top of his game. He surrendered only 1 hit and 5 walks
in 9 innings. Martinez mowed down 10 Cincinnati batters lowering his ERA to
2.77. The right-handed Martinez lost a no-hitter when Ray Knight singled
with two outs in the 9th inning. St. Louis banged out 7 hits on the
afternoon.
Mike Lacoss(8-2) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered
5 hits and 3 walks. John McNamara was upset after the game. 'I don't like to
