26,387 fans were treated to a fine game at Bush Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Cincinnati came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning scoring
3 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Dave Collins keyed the rally
when he lined a base-hit. After another out, Ken Griffey came to bat and
delivered a one-base hit. Griffey was running on the next pitch and he stole
second. Dan Driessen stepped in and he smacked a three-run homer. Dave
Concepcion came up to bat and stroked a single. Cincinnati continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base. Cincinnati managed 8 hits in
their victory.
The win was credited to Fred Norman(10-4) who went 7 innings allowing 4 runs.
Tom Hume preserved the game for Norman, recording his his 4th. Pete
Vuckovich(7-7) was given the loss.
With this win, Cincinnati has a 57-38 record. They have been 7-3 lately. St.
Louis has a record of 48-39 after the loss.
