Tom Hausman was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 3 hits as the
New York Mets topped the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings by a score of 1 to 0
at Shea Stadium.
The score was a scoreless tie after nine. New York won the hard fought
contest in the 11th inning. After two were out Willie Montanez reached on an
error. Pedro Borbon then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch
resulting in an exciting win for New York and a raucous post-game celebration
by the home town fans. New York finished with just 5 hits in the victory.
Hausman(1-0) went the distance for the shutout. Borbon(2-1) was given the loss
in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his
3 and 2/3 innings of work.
'When Hausman is on like that it is a tough game to play, no doubt about it,'
John McNamara said. 'He always pitches well against us.'
