Left fielder Dave Collins had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated
the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings 6 to 4 at Candlestick Park.
The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Cincinnati won it in the 10th
inning. Johnny Bench led off and started the attack as he reached on an
error. Dan Driessen followed and he lined a one-base hit. Ray Knight then
ripped a single. Collins came up and he doubled. Paul Blair got his chance
to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. One out later, Ken
Griffey stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Overall Cincinnati out-hit San Francisco 12 to 9.
Tom Hume(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no
runs. Gary Lavelle(2-3) ended up with the loss in relief.
Wth the win Cincinnati now has a record of a division leading 27-15. With the
loss, the San Francisco ballclub's record is 21-23.
