Johnny Bench slammed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated
the San Francisco Giants 16 to 9 at Candlestick Park.
Bench was a one-man wrecking crew. He clubbed a two-run home run in the 1st
inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 7th inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 8th inning and delivered a solo blast in the 9th inning.
Cincinnati bats were very productive in the 8th inning when they had 6 runs
on 5 hits. The Cincinnati offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9
innings.
The winning pitcher was Mike Lacoss(5-0) who allowed 5 runs in 5 innings. Vida
Blue(4-2) was charged with the loss. Cincinnati knocked him around a bit, as
he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings.
'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Bench said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'
