39,566 fans were treated to a fine game at Riverfront Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the
slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 8th. Dave Concepcion lined a
one-base hit. George Foster followed and he hit a single. After an out was
recorded, John D'Acquisto stepped in and he fired a sharp breaking ball that
appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled
a passed ball. Johnny Bench got his chance to keep things going, but he went
down on strikes. Champ Summers was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.
Cincinnati had only 5 hits for the game.
The victory went to Dave Tomlin(1-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
D'Acquisto(1-3) was the loser in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite
not allowing an earned run in his 3 innings of work.
