Fred Norman carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and Ray Knight had 3 base
hits at Fulton Co. Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves by
the count of 7 to 0.
Norman(1-0) was virtually untouchable. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. The left-handed Norman had his no-hit
bid broken up by Bob Beall who doubled with one out in the 8th inning.
Cincinnati totaled 15 hits on the night.
Phil Niekro(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 12 hits
and 3 walks in 8 innings. Bobby Cox was obviously impressed with the
pitching of Norman, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight.
We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just
hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'
