| In a strong pitching duel between Mario Soto and Dwight Gooden, a homer by Darryl Strawberry was the difference. Both pitchers were on their game with double digit strikeouts, but Gooden got the win in this 1985 National League replay. |

Dwight Gooden was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 3 hits as
the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 1 to 0 at
Riverfront Stadium.
Gooden(15-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Cincinnati hitters. He
didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Both teams ended up
with 3 hits on the night.
Mario Soto(7-6) was charged with the loss. Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 11 batters in 8 innings. Gooden was humble when questioned about his
performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I
had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an
extremely well called game!'
